OCHSNER premium high-tech heat pumps
From 1978 onwards, the family-owned business OCHSNER was one of the first companies in the world to concentrate exclusively on the development and production of high efficiency, high end heat pumps. OCHSNER has built up a reputation as a technology leader in the heat pump sector thanks to its outstanding technical achievements and innovations.
The company develops and manufactures its products exclusively in Austria and Germany, with production processes that comply with Industry 4.0 standards. The company's vision is to use environmental energy to contribute to solving the challenges of our global energy future and climate change.
The aim is to actively support the phase-out of fossil fuels and to make every heating system and every act of heat generation environmentally friendly. That's why our slogan is: OCHSNER heat pumps – for me and nature.
How do heat pumps work?
The heat pump gathers energy from various external sources like the ground, water, and air, and raises the heat from a lower to a higher temperature, even during winter at temperatures below 0°C. This is done in a sealed cycle by continuously changing the physical state of the heat transfer medium. The heat pump takes solar energy stored in natural sources — ground, water or air — and moves this heat to the heating and domestic hot water (DHW) circuits.
The efficiency of a heat pump is measured by its coefficient of performance (COP), indicating the amount of useful energy produced per unit of drive energy. A COP of 5 illustrates that 5 kW of heating output is generated from 1 kW of electricity, signifying that the additional 4 kW is graciously supplied by the sun, environment, or ground. This performance metric is acquired by dividing the thermal power delivered to the building by the electrical power consumed by the heat pump. While termed as COP when the heat pump operates in heating mode, it's referred to as Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) in cooling mode, maintaining a consistent measure of the heat pump's efficiency across different operational modes.
Types of heat pumps
Hot water heat pumps
Provide the house with a highly efficient and perfectly hygienic supply of hot water. They function independently of the heating system.
Air source heat pumps
Combine outstanding energy efficiency with low noise emissions and futureproof, durable technology.
Geothermal heat pumps
With horizontal collectors or geothermal probes, ground source heat pumps make highly efficient use of the ground as an abundant, free heat store.
Groundwater heat pumps
Feature maximum efficiency and durability. Essential requirements are access to groundwater and the relevant permits.
Tanks
High quality, efficient tanks and DHW solutions, which are ideally matched to OCHSNER heat pumps.
High capacity heat pumps
OCHSNER Energy Technology offers heat pumps for large outputs and high temperatures, for use in industry, commerce, infrastructure etc.
What heat pump to choose?
Choosing the right heat pump requires an understanding of the installation's characteristics. However, getting to know the features of each heat pump can also be beneficial in this process.
Ground source heat pumps top the charts in efficiency for air conditioning systems, but they do come with a few prerequisites. Firstly, they require land for geothermal boreholes. For new homes, these can be placed under the house, but renovations need outside space for the wells.
While the upfront cost of ground source is higher compared to air source systems, its superior efficiency pays off over time. Plus, ground source has a quieter operation and less visual impact, since air source systems require outdoor equipment that can be noisy and noticeable, despite recent models becoming quieter.
Climate also plays a part in choosing between these systems. In extreme climates with scorching summers and freezing winters, ground source system shines as it remains unaffected by outdoor temperature swings. On the flip side, while air source systems can operate in these extreme climates, their performance dips when it's very hot or cold, as they draw energy from the air, impacting the comfort and efficiency.
OCHSNER heat pumps advantages
Why choose an OCHSNER heat pump?
With 150 years of state of the art manufacturing, OCHSNER's efficiency and reliability comes from experience.
OCHSNER offers a wide product range from 2 to 2,500 kW using air, ground, or water as the heat source. These heat pumps are suitable for both new builds and renovation projects whether the building uses underfloor heating or radiators.
Backed by 150 years of manufacturing know-how and a strong R&D focus (around 6% of turnover), OCHSNER keeps pushing efficiency, reliability, and low-noise performance — regularly confirmed in independent tests. The portfolio covers everything from air/water, brine/water, and water/water systems to high-capacity units with flow temperatures up to 82°C and high-temperature solutions up to 130°C, with engineered details that support dependable operation even in harsh conditions (e.g., down to -23°C for air/water).
Beyond standard functions like space heating and domestic hot water, OCHSNER systems can also provide home cooling, pool heating, integration with photovoltaic (PV) systems, internet connectivity, connection to building management systems, and operation alongside other heat generators.
